STYLIST HEIDI O'ROURKE
While Heidi O’Rourke studied fashion technology - “which I loved but never pursued” - it was the world of interiors that became her primary interest, especially after the purchase of her first home in the mid-1990s. “I just couldn’t help myself, I was constantly beautifying that little house,” she says. While she considered a career in interior design, she was content working in a role for a floristry supply company. However, 15 years ago she left it to help support her husband’s career. “I have got used to the freedom that allows and don’t think I could ever go back to a full-time job,” Heidi says. For years she spent hours scrap-booking clippings, samples and swatches and more recently this has come to life on her popular Instagram feed Mozsas. “I very quickly connected with so many like-minded people - two years on, I couldn’t imagine not having that outlet in my life,” she says. Heidi was born and raised, and continues to live, on the rural outskirts of Sydney.
Which five words best describe you? Maker, doer, crafter, dreamer, talker.
How did you get your career start and what path have you taken since? I have never been the career type. I’ve never had a plan. I’m currently working along side my husband in the automotive repair industry. Styling for photos is something I love, it’s good for my creative side, immensely therapeutic and extremely satisfying when you capture that perfect shot.
What’s the best lesson you’ve learnt along the way? Work hard and the rewards will come but don’t forget to enjoy life along the way!
What’s your proudest career achievement? As far as styling goes - capturing that perfect shot! Otherwise it would have to be supporting my husband in a business we built from the ground up - two heads are better than one.
What’s been your best decision? Ahhhh... there are so many! Very hard to pin point my best decision. I make decisions every day; those decisions have brought me to this point in my life. My best decision may be still to come.
Who inspires you? I am very easily inspired. I find inspiration wherever I go - people, places, things...
What are you passionate about? Australia - I love this country! Homes that suit their surroundings, the hedges in my garden, beautiful barns, animal welfare, rope - I don’t think I’ll ever own enough! I could go on.
Which person, living or dead, would you most like to meet? Never really thought about that but I wish I knew more about the history of my local area so I’d love to get a fly-on-the-wall view of them all going about their daily business back in the horse and cart days.
What dream do you still want to fulfil? I would love to do a coffee table book one day.
What are you reading? Actually, nothing. I do enjoy a good biography from time to time though.
