creative director ben david

The last time I spoke to Sydney-based Ben David he was just back from Mexico. When I tried to make contact again, he was in Melbourne. This peripatetic life is all part of his job as creative director for the bedlinen company Kas. Ben is responsible for look of the brand, and comes up with the concepts for the ranges and photo shoots, as well as being hands-on in producing the catalogues. Working on shoots for the company is how he got his start after returning from London to work for the business that his parents set up in 1976. While Kas is still family owned, and manufactures in Australia, its wares are sold across the globe - from Switzerland to Singapore. It also is stocked in Selfridges in London.

Which five words best describe you? Celadon, aquamarine. I know that there are colours, but there is a story behind them. When I was little my mother taught me colours like celadon, vermillion, cerise and slate grey from the age of five. So I feel that colour is a big part of me. It's my life.
How did you get your career start and what path have you taken since? I was given the chance to create my own shoots for Kas almost a decade ago in Leichhardt: building sets, styling bedrooms. I'm so glad I was given that opportunity so that I now have the knowledge to create some amazing projects.
What’s the best lesson you’ve learnt along the way? Have patience and don’t rush it.
What’s your proudest career achievement? Giving Kas its brand identity, which I'm still working on today.
What’s been your best decision? Coming back from London to work with my parents.
Who inspires you? Karen And Steve (KAS), the designers I work with, travelling, magazines, international trade shows, Kelly Wearstler, Valentino
What are you passionate about? Colour, fashion, textiles, architecture.
Which person, living or dead, would you most like to meet? Valentino
What dream do you still want to fulfil? Having my own fashion brand.
What are you reading? About the building of the village of Costa Careyes, Mexico. The colours are amazing. I shot the latest Kas Collection there.
