fashion designer aurelio costarella

Australian fashion designer Aurelio Costarella started his studies in architecture before taking a slightly unconventional change in direction towards becoming a fashion designer. Since launching his label in 1984 he has shown his designs at New York Fashion Week, and gained international stockists. He is based in Perth.

How did you get your career start and what path have you taken since?
Fashion found me... it was all quite accidental. I began making clothing in the early 1980s as a bit of fun while studying architecture. I started supplying a store with one-off creations which was so well received I dropped out of uni. I never imagined that it would evolve into what it has become today.
What’s the best lesson you’ve learnt along the way? To breathe!
What’s your proudest career achievement? My very first show at New York Fashion Week 2007. It was a dream of mine for years. It proved that anything is possible through hard work and determination.
What’s been your best decision? To believe in my own creative decisions and not be distracted by what others are doing or what you think you should be doing.
Who inspires you? Life... art, music, colour, nature, light, architecture.
What are you passionate about? Quality and integrity.
Which person, living or dead, would you most like to meet? Diana Vreeland and/or Coco Chanel.
What dream do you still want to fulfil? Live and work in New York for a while.
What are you reading? The Dark Side of The Light Chasers – Debbie Ford.
