photographer roger deckker

When I contacted Roger Deckker he said he doesn't usually do interviews. Guess he doesn't really need to. If you check out the long list of clients, the calibre of people he has photographed and the extensive fashion portfolio, then if nothing else he's probably too busy. But Australia is a very special place for him. It's where he got his start. So here they are...

Which five words best describe you?
A man with a camera.
How did you get your career start and what path have you taken since? I got my first break at the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (the Powerhouse Museum) in Sydney photographing the collection and people and places associated with the collection. Then after a few years I moved into fashion and portrait work to explore the creative freedom that genre offered.
What’s the best lesson you’ve learnt along the way? To approach my work with open eyes.
What’s your proudest career achievement? To be working in what I do.
What’s been your best decision? To move to London and New York for my work.
Who inspires you? The work of many photographers, artists, musicians, the ocean, the land.
What are you passionate about? My girls and my life as a visual artist.
Which person, living or dead, would you most like to meet? My mother. She died too young.
What dream do you still want to fulfil? I have many dreams to fulfill, I am a dreamer.
What are you reading? Life of Pi. An oldie but a goodie.
